Cedar House Montessori is a preschool in Seattle that gives young children a daily routine with plenty of room for independence, free choice, and outdoor time. The school appears especially well suited to preschool-age children who benefit from a calm, responsive setting where they can warm up at their own pace and gradually join group activities.
Children here may take part in a mix of classroom work and creative activities such as music, dance, art, and yoga, along with time for exploring interests in a more self-directed way. Families looking for a Montessori-style program will likely appreciate the balance between structured routines and opportunities for children to follow their own interests. The classroom also includes mixed ages, which can give younger children a chance to observe older classmates while older children practice patience and gentleness with younger peers.
The environment comes across as warm, attentive, and communication-friendly, with teachers who seem to work closely with families and share regular updates. That can be especially helpful for parents who want to stay connected to what their child is doing each day. The school also places a strong focus on nature and outdoor time, which may appeal to families who want more than a purely indoor classroom experience.
Cedar House Montessori may be a good fit for families seeking Montessori preschool in Seattle that feels personal, supportive, and flexible enough for children with different temperaments. Parents who value teacher consistency, seasonal activities, and a school community that supports both academic readiness and social-emotional growth may want to learn more.
Like her parents, our daughter is rather shy, so we were very unsure of how her first year of school would go, largely being at home prior to. Little did we know how good the year would go. It was funny watching the progression of our LO initially sitting off to the side and not participating, to eventually moving gradually closer, and later joining in. After school, she would play/practice the music/dance, art, and yoga she did in class and even her school duties at home. Merrill has a great program and is great at guiding kids of various dispositions. Our LO has progressed so much thanks in large part to Merrill and Juli and we couldn't be happier that she enjoys going to Cedar House.
Cedar House was a great preschool for our kid for three years. The teachers are loving, attentive, and communicative. They always created special activities for different seasons and had a Seward Park day once a month in Spring/summer. Our kid thrived there and made a lot of friends!
We are so grateful that our son got to spend 3 years of preschool with teachers Merrill, Juli & Jon. Finding a preschool that provided teacher consistency and significant free choice & outdoor time were our top priorities and Cedar House gave us that and a lot more! We loved the focus on nature and outdoor time while also building social and emotional skills. Merrill has designed a school that has the perfect balance of meeting each student exactly where they are, while also encouraging growth. We loved that the students were allowed to pursue their own interests while still having a daily routine. The mix of ages in the classroom allowed our son learn from older children and also practice being gentle and patient with the younger children. We loved the communication from Merrill. We got regular updates, photos & messages about what was happening at school. When there was something that needed to be discussed Merrill and Juli were honest, thoughtful & supportive. With their vast experience & education they always had great insight and it felt like we were working together as a team both at home and at school. Our son was well prepared for Kindergarten thanks to Merrill, Juli & Jon. We absolutely loved our time at Cedar House and highly recommend the school.
We were so lucky to have our daughter at Cedar House with Teacher Merrill and Teacher Juli! We always felt she was in great hands, she grew so much in her time at Cedar House. The teachers are very attuned to each child's specific developmental stage, and tailor their approach to meet each child where they are and help them grow. Cedar House is an incredibly supportive and nurturing environment. We feel fortunate to be a part of the Cedar House community!
